How old do you need to be to rent a car in New Zealand?

To rent a car in New Zealand you must be at least 21 years old and have held your license for a minimum of one year. Certain car categories may be restricted for drivers under the age of 25. Drivers under 25 may also see a young driver surcharge added to the daily rental rate from many suppliers. These same drivers may also be required to purchase inclusive car rental insurance. Can I drive my rental car between North and South Island?

No cars are allowed on the ferries between the North and South Island of New Zealand. If you need to travel between islands, you will drop off a car at the ferry port on the North Island (Wellington) and travel to the ferry port on the South Island (Picton). You will be provided with new car by our supplier when you arrive at the ferry port. You need to contact the rental company 24-48 hours in advance so they can arrange your new car.

Is rental car insurance required for drivers in New Zealand?
