There is over 124 thousand miles (199,640 km) of road in Poland and these roads can take you from the cities of Warsaw and Gdansk to remote villages with castles and old-world culture. You will find multi-lane highways in the capital of Warsaw and there are ongoing projects to improve the roads in rural areas. Don't be surprised to find horse drawn wagons on the road in many rural areas of Poland and be sure to give them the right of way.
To rent a car in Poland, you must be at least 21 years old (age may vary by car category) and have held your license for 1 year. A few car classes have a maximum rental age of 70 years. Drivers renting a car under the age of 25 may incur a young driver surcharge. An International Drivers License is required. Seatbelts are mandatory and child seats are mandatory for children up to age 4.
Traffic travels on the right and passing is on the left. All trams should be passed on the right. At the Polish border crossing, you will need to present your drivers license, passport and proof of third-party insurance.

Parking & Tolls in Poland As of July 2022, toll collection was abolished on Poland's national roads like the A2, A4, and S7. Tolls remain on motorways operated by private concessionaires. Tolls are paid at toll gates in cash, by credit card, online or mobile app or on-board unit. Small cars can park half-on and half-off the sidewalk. Parking is illegal within 5.5 yards/meters of a crosswalk. |

All our car rental rates include fire and third party liability insurance. Our inclusive rates also provide collision and theft coverage at an advance purchase discount. You may elect to decline collision and theft coverage. If you plan to take advantage of coverage offered by your credit card, please contact your card issuer directly for details. Specific insurance information for your reservation will be printed on your confirmation voucher.
The following guidelines apply to rentals commencing in Poland.
Required Insurance CoverageFire and third party liability insurance is mandatory and is included in all rentals. Third party liability insurance offers $10,000 to an unlimited amount of coverage in case of damage or injury to people or property outside of the rental car.
Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and theft protection are included in our inclusive rates at a discount. CDW and theft protection can purchased at the rental counter. CDW and theft coverage reduce the deductible (responsibility of the client), depending on the vehicle type rented. Personal Accident Insurance (PAI) is available with some suppliers at the rental counter. Super CDW may be offered locally to reduce the deductible as low as zero. Optional insurance coverage is available with select suppliers only, rates subject to change without notice.
Most rental car categories in Poland can be driven anywhere in Western Europe without restriction, however you will need to purchase ‘Green Card Insurance’ at the time of pick up. Due to insurance regulations, there are restrictions on luxury car categories and on travel in certain countries. Please take a minute to ensure that your intended itinerary will be possible with the car you plan to rent.
Cars rented in Poland are not allowed into the following countries, depending on supplier: Albania, Bosnia, Belarus, Bulgaria, Croatia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Montenegro, Russia, Slovenia, Turkey, Ukraine and Yugoslavia. Travel to other European countries not previously listed is permitted with the purchase of green card insurance locally.
Domestic one-way rentals are available between select locations, additional fees may apply. There are fees for international one-way car rentals, and not all vehicles are allowed.
