    Netherlands Driving InformationAn excellent series of highways makes Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Den Haag (The Hague) and Groningen a short day trip from anywhere in The Netherlands. Canals, windmills and world famous tulips line the extensive roadways of The Netherlands. Explore the beautiful North Sea coast and visit local fishing villages with their colorfully painted homes. The Netherlands highway system also offers easy access to nearby international destinations such as Brussels, Dusseldorf and Luxembourg.

    Driving Requirements

    To rent a car in the Netherlands, you must be at least 21 years old (age may vary by car category) and have held your license for 1 year. Drivers under the age of 25 may incur a young driver surcharge. Seatbelts and child seats for children up to 40 lbs are mandatory. Children under 12 and/or 54 inches in height cannot travel as front seat passenger unless using suitable restraint system.

    Rules of the Road

    Traffic travels on the right and all trams should be passed on the right. Passing or turning is forbidden on roads with a continuous white line.

    Gas Station Availability - In most cities, gas stations are open from 8am to 9pm. Stations are open 24 hours on national highways.

    There are no toll highways in the Netherlands.

    In cities, you will need a time stamped parking disc to park in 'blue zone' areas. These discs, placed on the dashboard, can be obtained at motor club offices, tobacco shops and police stations. Parking is not available by black and white or yellow curbs.

    Car Rental Insurance Information in the Netherlands

    Car rental insurance varies widely, so please review the information below prior to making your reservation. Regulations of the country where you rent the car will be in effect for the duration of your rental.

    All our car rental rates include fire and third party liability insurance. Our inclusive rates also provide collision and theft coverage at an advance purchase discount. You may elect to decline collision and theft coverage. If you plan to take advantage of coverage offered by your credit card, please contact your card issuer directly for details. Specific insurance information for your reservation will be printed on your confirmation voucher.

    The following guidelines apply to rentals commencing in the Netherlands

    Netherlands Driving InformationRequired Coverage

    Fire and third party liability insurance is mandatory and is included in all rentals. Third party liability insurance offers up to $2,000,000 for coverage in case of damage or injury to people or property outside of the rental car.

    Optional Coverage

    Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and theft protection are included in our inclusive rates at a discount. CDW and theft protection can be purchased at the rental counter. CDW and theft coverage reduce the deductible (responsibility of the client), depending on the vehicle type rented. Personal Accident Insurance (PAI) is available with some suppliers at the rental counter. Super CDW may be offered locally to reduce the deductible as low as zero. Optional insurance coverage is available with select suppliers only, rates subject to change without notice.


    Car Rental Restrictions in the Netherlands

    Most rental car categories in the Netherlands can be driven anywhere in Western Europe without restriction. Due to insurance regulations, there are restrictions on luxury car categories and on travel in certain countries. Auto Europe has special rental programs for driving into Eastern Europe. Please take a minute to ensure that your intended itinerary will be possible with the car you plan to rent.
