    Hungary Driving InformationMotorways and main routes in Hungary tend to be in good condition but don't be surprised to find that some of the roads have a very rough, gravel surface. There are eight main routes in Hungary that are designated by a single digit system; seven of them pass through the capital of Budapest. Secondary roads are indicated by two or more digit numbers. These roads traverse Hungary's countryside, mineral spas and lush farmlands.

    Car Rental Age Requirements in Hungary

    To rent a car in Hungary, you must be at least 19 years old (age may vary by car category) and have held your license for one year. Drivers renting a car under the age of 25 may incur a young driver surcharge. Maximum drivers age is 99. Seatbelts are mandatory. Child safety seats are mandatory up to age 3. There is no permissible blood alcohol level in Hungary. An International Drivers License is strongly recommended!

    Traffic travels on the right and streetcars and buses always have the right of way. Motorists stopped for a traffic violation must pay the fine, on the spot, in the national currency.

    In Hungary, some highways require a toll sticker (e-vignette). E-vignettes can be purchased at gas stations, highway stations, and online. They cost around $15 and $30 depending on the duration selected (4 days, 1 week & 1 month).

    Most of the main tourist areas have free parking. Parking is permitted on the right-hand side of two-way streets and on both sides of one-way streets.

    Car Rental Insurance Information in Hungary

    Car rental insurance varies widely, so please review the information below prior to making your reservation. Regulations of the country where you rent the car will be in effect for the duration of your rental.

    All our car rental rates include fire and third party liability insurance. Our inclusive rates also provide collision and theft coverage at an advance purchase discount. You may elect to decline collision and theft coverage. If you plan to take advantage of coverage offered by your credit card, please contact your card issuer directly for details. Specific insurance information for your reservation will be printed on your confirmation voucher.

    Hungary Driving InformationRequired Coverage

    Fire and third party liability insurance is mandatory and is included in all rentals. Third party liability insurance covers damage or injury to people or property outside of the rental car.

    Optional Coverage

    Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and theft protection are included in our inclusive rates at a discount. CDW and theft protection can be purchased locally. CDW and theft coverage reduce the deductible (responsibility of the client), depending on the vehicle type. Personal Accident Insurance is available at the rental counter. Coverage varies by rental agency. Ask us for specific details. Super CDW may be offered locally to reduce the deductible as low as zero. Optional insurance coverage is available with select suppliers only, rates subject to change without notice.


    Car Rental Restrictions in Hungary

    Most car categories can be driven anywhere in Western Europe without restriction. Due to insurance regulations, there are restrictions on luxury car categories and on travel in certain countries. Auto Europe has special rental programs for driving into other Eastern Europe countries. Please take a minute to ensure that your intended itinerary will be possible with the car you plan to rent.

    Travel is permitted into Austria, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Slovenia, Portugal, Spain, France, Belgium, Holland, Luxembourg, Denmark, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Moldova, Macedonia, Bulgaria, UK, and Ireland with a cross border fee.
