How old do you need to be to rent a car in Ireland?
To rent a car in Ireland, you must be at least 21 years old and have held your license for at least two years. Most rental car companies will charge a driver surcharge for car renters under 25. This surcharge varies by supplier but can range between $10 and USD 25 daily.
In addition to the minimum rental car age requirement, many suppliers in Ireland have a maximum age requirement of 70. Travelers over 70 who want to rent a car in Ireland may be required to present documentation from a doctor or their current insurance company stating they have not been in an accident in the past five years. Some suppliers can be very strict regarding age requirements; check with your Auto Europe reservations agent to ensure no surprises at the rental counter if you fall into one of these age ranges.
Can I use my domestic driver's license to drive in Ireland?
Like many European countries, travelers from the United States and Canada can pick up a car in Ireland and drive off the lot with a domestic driver's license in good standing. That being said, it is highly encouraged that all travelers acquire an international driver's permit in Ireland. While you may not be legally required to possess one, you may receive a fine if pulled over without an IDP. These can be purchased from your local AAA branch for only $20, a fraction of what you may be fined should you be pulled over without an international driver's license.
Can I drive my rental car to other countries?
Cars rented in the Republic of Ireland can be taken to Northern Ireland free of charge if the renter does not hold a Northern Ireland driver's license. Cars rented in Ireland can travel to the United Kingdom for an additional fee but cannot be taken to the European continent. Domestic one-way car rentals are available between select locations. The only international one-way rental available is to Belfast, Northern Ireland. Additional fees may apply, and not all vehicles are available.
