If you’re a Game of Thrones fan, perhaps you’re well aware that Iceland is where every scene “north of the Wall” took place. Based on the folklore surrounding the Land of Fire and Ice, the producers of this hit HBO show couldn’t have chosen a better place to depict fire-breathing dragons and warrior zombies trudging through the tundra. While the following information will certainly contain some spoilers of this mega series, we at Auto Europe have compiled a list of filming locations in Iceland where some of our reputable providers such as Procar are located nearby! Even better, many of these stops are close to Iceland's three extraordinary national parks!
As far as travel logistics go, the following places can be found along the Iceland's famous Route 1. Often called the Ring Road, the highway that encircles Iceland is a tourist attraction in and of itself. That's to say, it showcases the country's advanced road infrastructure while not disturbing the mesmerizing landscapes that the island is known for. With so much to see from even the passenger window, car rentals in Iceland are definitely the most effective means of exploration! Despite the remoteness of certain locations, Auto Europe can even assist with low-cost mobile hotspots to ensure seamless navigation throughout these five attractions:
Equipped with your Keflavik car rental, visitors arriving at the Keflavik Airport can look forward to touring the area where Brienne of Tarr and the Hound duked it out in Season 4. With its rolling emerald hills, jagged outcroppings and major geothermal activity, the large volcanic mountain also offers some prime hiking, not to mention scenic views of the Hengill and Reykjadalur valleys down below. Being a geothermal hot spot, one of the most popular activities to do is bathe in the hot river that goes through Reykjadalur. Even better, all of these impressive nature activities are only one hour away from the Icelandic capital.
Only a 38-minute ride from Reykjavik via car rental, newcomers to Iceland can explore the pristine waterfall and stunning scenery surrounding the petite Thorufoss Waterfall. Many Game of Thrones fan may recall this landmark as the spot where Daenerys Targaryen’s beloved dragons barbecued an unlucky herd of goats in Season 4. Needless to say, the shepherd wasn't too happy. Regardless of the lack of endemic goats around this waterfall, access to this little cascade is very easy considering it's directly off the highway. There's even a designated parking spot for visitors. Nonetheless, be aware that a bumpy road awaits you, meaning a versatile van rental with four-wheel drive could be a wise transportation option. This way, you will be ready for any sort of weather that awaits you!
About a 1-hour and 50-minute car ride in your rental from Vestmannaeyjar (ferry ride included), this astonishing rock canyon is where John Snow and his motley crew captured a spastic zombie to show Cersei Lannister in Season 7. Meaning the "Valley of Thor" in Icelandic, the 100-meter-deep depression goes through the remote region of Þórsmörk that's known for its ginormous volcanic mountains, extensive caves and extraordinary rock canyons.
Also a 2-hour trek from the windswept archipelago of Vestmannaeyjar is the massive basalt columns and alluring black sand beach of Reynisfjara. Towering above the dark shoreline are long geometric rock columns. Out in the water are sharp and jagged islands that certainly add to the sensation that you're entering a science fiction novel! Certainly isolate, this is where the remote community of Eastwatch-by-the-Sea was based in Game of Thrones. While it is incredibly scenic not to mention surreal, the waves at Reynisfjara can be rather intense, so swim cautiously if you can handle the cold waters! Despite the cold temperatures, this is a location that you will not want to miss!
Resembling a never-ending frozen river, just below Vatnajökull National Park and near the Ring Road are the glacier fields of Svínafellsjökull. Specifically, this is an outlying glacier of Vatnajökull, which just so happens to be the largest ice cap in all of Europe. Not only is this where Jon Snow’s group fought against the ominous Army of the Dead in Season 7 but also where he crossed paths with his estranged love interest, Ygritte, in Season 2. A simple 1-hour and 50-minute journey from Höfn in a rental car, this location is certainly one for the books. Just don’t walk on the glaciers unless you're on a guided tour, which are fortunately readily available!
From luxury cars to compact models, our search engine located at the top of the page can assist you in finding the best rates for car rentals in Iceland and beyond.
