What Are Umweltzones?Umweltzones (Green Zones) in Germany are portions of cities that require certain vehicles to have obtained a sticker signifying that they meet the carbon usage, or lack there of, in order to drive within the confines of the zone. This includes most vehicles, including diesel. Light two-wheelers (motorcycles), three-wheelers and quads are exempt from needing to purchase a sticker.
Most rental car suppliers will provide the vehicle with an environmental sticker, but it is good to double check, especially before driving into any large city. In the event that your automotive rental does not have the needed sticker, they can be purchased for 12.50 EUR ($13.85 USD) from many auto shops that handle emissions tests, as well as various certification agencies like DEKRA and TÜV. You can also ask your rental agent where to purchase one, if your car does not come with one equipped.
Travelers who would like to plan out their journey with as much information about their destination as possible will be happy to know that there is a Green Zone App available on both IOS and Android. This application will give travelers in depth information about the Green Zones in whichever city they plan on visiting. This way they can either avoid certain areas, or proceed at their own pace.
Drivers who fail to obtain an environmental badge, yet proceed to drive in an umweltzone will be subject to fines in excess of 40-100 EUR ($44-110 USD) for each infraction. Needless to say this can add up quite quickly. Be sure to have your environmental sticker prior to driving within any umweltzone (green zone).
