You might spend weeks in Charleston and yet not see all there is to see and do, what with the city's picturesque cobblestone streets, horse-drawn carriages, antebellum houses, and Lowcountry cuisine.

Take the boat to Fort Sumter, a Civil War sea fort, see Battery Park and Rainbow Row, browse at the Historic Charleston City Market, and marvel at the majestic Angel Oak (more on that below). Explore the city's history on a carriage ride, see the dawn from Folly Beach, or stop at Magnolia Plantation, named one of America's Most Beautiful Gardens by Travel + Leisure.

Brookgreen Gardens is a 9,000-acre garden and National Historic Landmark located just south of Myrtle Beach near Murrells Inlet.

Explore the sculpture gardens, which include over 2,000 pieces of art by 430 artists, and stroll through the apparently endless groves of live oak trees draped in hanging moss. To behold is the American figurative sculpture collection in Brookgreen Gardens, which is the biggest and most extensive in the nation.

The Lowcountry Zoo is also located there. There are no wild natural animals in the Lowcountry Zoo; all of the animals were either born and reared there or were severely injured. These creatures would perish in the wild regardless of the circumstances.

Middleton Place

Our list just couldn't be complete without including this National Historic Landmark in Charleston.

When visiting South Carolina, you must visit Middleton Place. It has some of the earliest surviving examples of American landscape design. Visit the 1755-built House Museum, relax on the beautiful grounds, learn about the animals and plantation life in the Stableyards, stay the night at the Inn at Middleton Place, or fill up on delicious food at the Middleton Place Restaurant.

The enslaved individuals whose labor made this home possible will also be brought to light during your tour.

Broadway at the beach

When in Myrtle Beach, don't miss out on Broadway at the Beach. Everything from shopping to food to sightseeing and nightlife can be found in this bustling tourist hub.

Pavilion Park, located on Broadway at the Beach, is a premier South Carolina amusement park. A day pass and parking are both free. Enjoy the thrills, including the roller coaster and the Ferris wheel!

Fort Sumter National Monument

Visitors to Charleston may board ferries to the Civil War sea fort at Fort Sumter National Monument from Liberty Square and Patriots Point. This park's historical sites include both Fort Constea and Fort Moultrie. The two forts together represent two of the state's most important historical landmarks.

In order to defend Charleston Harbor, both Fort Sumter and Fort Moultrie were built. Fort Moultrie's defenders were victorious over the British navy in 1776.

On April 12, 1861, the Confederacy launched an attack on the United States garrison at Fort Sumter, setting off a war that would forever alter the meaning of freedom in the United States.
