10 Cars in Film That Don't Survive
Hollywood loves to wreck cars. There are so many great car chase scenes it would be hard to imagine a world where they didn't do this. Here is a list of ten legendary cars that Hollywood has famously destroyed, or at least ruined on screen.
Cameron (Alan Ruck) inadvertently destroys his fathers prize possession, a 1961 Ferrari 250 GT California, but you don't need cringe too hard.The car used in filming, and the stunt car that was destroyed were replicas. That didn't stop a buyer from paying $122,000 USD for the undamaged replica at an auction in 2010.
The Hangover - 1969 Mercedes-Benz 280SE cabriolet
Apparently 5 replicas of this beauty were produced for the film, one for each level of abuse it takes in the movie. The car would realistically be worth upwards of 100k each if the producers had chosen to use the real ones.The 5 cars produced were put on eBay after the movie, however since they were only built to handle filming for a few weeks, the quality was questionable. At the time they failed to fetch the 20k asking price.
The Rock - 1996 Ferrari F355 Spider
Dr. Stanley Goodspeed (Nicholas Cage) needs a vehicle, so naturally he chose a Ferrari F355 Spider. Is there a better choice to chase a Hummer being driven by a former MI6 Agent (Sean Connery) through the streets of San Francisco?The spectacular car chase is one of the most memorable in recent memory and ends with the untimely destruction of the Ferrari by a derailed street car.
Back to the Future - 1946 Ford Super De Luxe Convertible
Never has the destruction of a classic car made audiences cheer like in Back to the Future. The classic chase scene featuring Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) on the run from Biff Tannen (Thomas F. Wilson) and his band of thugs is truly timeless, and the fact that they end up crashing into a truck of manure once Marty escapes only makes it better.Biff's car was a 1946 Ford Super De Luxe convertible with a 292 flathead V8 engine. It was undoubtedly nice to look at, but it would be hard to believe you could ever get that smell out! It was on public display at Universal Studios for many years but was sold to a private collector in 1996 and now resides in Wisconsin.
Jurassic Park - 1992 Jeep Wrangler Sahara / 1992 Ford Explorer XLT
John Hammond (Richard Attenborough) spared no expense on the park vehicles, however he apparently did on Dennis Nedry's (Wayne Knight) salary. This caused the money hungry programmer to take a modified 1992 Wrangler Sahara to the east dock along with a sample of each dinosaur embryo.Not long after that, a T-rex made a brief meal of an electric 1992 Ford Explorer XLT. You can catch a glimpse of one of the Explorers at Universal Studios in California, and hobbyists have made many replicas of the Wranglers.
Gone in 60 Seconds 1967 Shelby Mustang GT500
Don't worry, no actual Shelbys were harmed in the making of this film. However five of the 12 replicas made specifically for the movie were not so lucky.Apparently producer Jerry Bruckheimer and actor Nicholas Cage each took one of the replicas for their own collections. Bruckheimer has said he's afraid to drive his, but Cage admits he enjoys taking his for spins around the neighborhood from time to time.
Casino Royale - 2006 Aston Martin DBS
The Aston Martin cars that were made specifically for Casino Royale were given to the studio for the appearance in the film, which is quite generous considering that each one has a price tag of over 400k. The DBS makes a spectacular exit from the film, setting the world record for most barrel rolls assisted by cannon.
Dark Knight - 2007 Lamborghini Murcielago
In the Dark Knight, Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) prevents an assassination attempt by allowing a truck to crash into his Lamborghini Murcielago. Three cars were given to the production, which means we could be seeing a reprise in the third installment of the Nolan Batman films, which comes out in 2012.In case you were wondering, Murcielago is the spanish word for bat, however the 640 HP uber car was in production long before Lamborghini were approached by producers of the film. If you have the urge to drive one, Auto Europe offers several Lamborghini models from the luxury car rentals department.
Con-Air - 1967 Corvette Sting Ray
The 1967 Corvette Sting Ray `was owned by the overzealous DEA agent Duncan Malloy (Colm Meany), and was clearly his prize possession. Was he trying to make up for something? Hard to say, but he clearly wouldn't have been thrilled about Marshal Vince Larkin (John Cusack) 'borrowing' the beautiful antique, even if it hadn't been flown into the air by a plane and hurled through a control tower.
Fast and the Furious - 1970 Dodge Charger
A list of cars in film wouldn't be complete without a mention of Dominic Toretto's (Vin Diesel) way cool (and cursed) Dodge Charger. The Charger has been one of Hollywood's favorite cars to crash and destroy, which has made them harder to find for producers of the popular film series. There are at least 4 in storage right now, so it's probably safe to not rule out another installment.
