Since there is now no law prohibiting camping elsewhere in Chile (apart from a small number of beaches), you can do so at no cost. Outside of the most rural areas, even Caravan Park camping is a cheap option.
In most urban areas, 50 kilometers per hour is the limit. While the speed limit on highways is often 120 km/h, camper vehicles are limited to a maximum of 90 km/h. No matter how good or bad the road is, you shouldn't drive faster than 60 km/h on it. The camper will be noticeably more in motion during windy weather.
Wild camping in Chile is legal in some locations, such as the outlying countryside and beaches, but is prohibited on privately owned land. You should expect to be taken from or asked to leave a popular beach if you try to set up a tent there.
A regular driver's license is sufficient for operating a campervan. A Spanish translation or foreign driver's license is highly recommended.
