Do I Need an International Driving Permit in Switzerland?

International Driving Permits in Switzerland Carrying an international driving permit (IDP) in Switzerland is not required to drive a rental car within the country. If you plan on driving into other European countries, be aware an IDP may be required! The international permit is good not only in Switzerland, but France and many other nearby European countries - with this license, you can enjoy your vacation in Switzerland without restriction!

An international driving permit must be carried along with your US driver's license. It should be presented when you are renting a car and can help bridge the language gap should you get stopped by law enforcement or if you should be involved in a minor accident while driving in Switzerland. The license is a translated version of your license information, making it much easier to communicate with local officials during your trip. If you plan to visit more than one country, you will also find that this license comes in handy and makes things much easier when you simply want to enjoy your time in the area. IDPs are translated into many languages so carrying one allows you to seamlessly travel to any country in Europe.

Applying for an International Drivers Permit in Switzerland

Applying for an international drivers permit for your trip to Switzerland is simple. Anyone who is 18 years of age with a valid driver's license is eligible for the international license. There is a fee of $20 that must be paid when applying. An IDP application must also be completed. There are many different places advertising international licenses online, however, there are only two locations that the U.S. Department of Transportation authorizes for the license. Those two agencies are the  American Automobile Association (AAA) and the American Automobile Touring Alliance (AATA) You can apply for the international license at either of these locations online or in person.

If you choose to apply online, the application must be printed and mailed in with the appropriate documentation. You need to include two passport photos and a copy of your driver's license. You should copy both the back and front of the license. If you are applying in person, the same information must be presented. Cash is not accepted for the international license fee, so be prepared to pay with a money order, check or with a credit or debit card.

After the license has been awarded, it is good for a duration of one year. This makes it easy for you to travel frequently if you desire. It is also a great aid for students who are attending school in the country, and for business travelers.
