Travelers are not taxed when transporting an appropriate number of items for personal use back to the United States. Each passenger is able to bring back no more than one liter of alcohol or two liters of wine at a time. Consumers of legal age are also only allowed to bring in no more than 250 cigarettes.
Banks are typically open from 9:30am to 4pm in Denmark, but a few will remain open as late as 6pm on Thursdays. Other locations, such as those in Copenhagen, will run longer hours during the week, but charge a hefty commission when cashing traveler's checks. For transactions such as this, the AmEx office in Copenhagen (Amagertorv 18; 33-11-50-05) is more user-friendly and charges a much lower penalty.
Service charges are applied directly to your bill in restaurants, hotels and taxis. However, additional pay is permissible when exceptional service is provided. In this instance, the common practice is to round up. Hotel porters and washroom attendants, on the other hand, earn 5 DKr per bag and 1 or 2 DKr respectively.

Stores & Post Offices: 9 or 10am - 5:30 or 6pm weekdays (later on Fridays and until noon or 2pm on Saturdays). Longer Saturday hours are offered in Copenhagen in the summers and during the month of December.
Restaurants: Lunch is served at noon, with dinner being offered until 9pm.
