Ostia is a very young city by Italian standards, having been founded in 1884 near the remains of the ancient port city of Rome. Nearby marshlands had to be drained in order to rid the area of malaria, which was widespread. In 1924, a railway was opened connecting Rome to the small town of Ostia, which quickly became the favorite sea resort of wealthy Romans, who constructed many Art Nouveau houses on the waterfront. After World War II, Ostia continued to grow as a tourist destination, however, sea pollution lowered the popularity of the city in the 1970's. In 1976, Ostia officially became a commune of Rome, which began working to improve the tourist appeal of the city and reduce pollution. Contemporarily, Ostia has regained its status as a popular beach resort due to its proximity to Rome Fiumicino Airport, which has led many travelers and airport employees to relax on the beach between flights.
