Although L'Aquila is about an hour and a half from the city of Rome, it has not developed a strong tourism industry. The city sits on a hillside in the middle of a valley, with the snow-capped mountains flanking the town, which makes the city very popular among travelers looking for extensive hiking trails in the summer, and fills the ski resorts located just outside L'Aquila. In 2009, an earthquake hit the city and killed over 300 inhabitants and largely destroyed the modern city; in response, the Italian government decided to move that year's G8 summit to L'Aquila, so the disaster funds could be distributed to the city's residents and promote faster reconstruction. Since 2009, facilities for tourists have been constructed and L'Aquila is open to any traveler with a car rental or looking to explore central Italy!
Individuals interested in renting a car in L'Aquila are now required to get an International Driver's Permit prior to obtaining their vehicle. You can acquire an IDP from your local AAA for approximately $20. Click here to keep reading about the new IDP requirements in Italy.
