Travelers leaving Australia with an appropriate quantity of personal goods aren't taxed for exportation. However, alcohol and tobacco have some restrictions You may only leave with one liter of alcohol and two liters of wine, as well as no more than 200 cigarettes, 50 cigars, or 250 grams of tobacco per consumer.

    Banking & Currency

Australian banks determine their own hours of operation. It is standard for them to be open from 930am-4pm Monday through Thursday, and 930am-5pm. Some offices hold extended hours, particularly in urban areas. Some of Australia’s major hotels will also give you the option to exchange currency. Visit for current exchange rates.

Tipping is not expected at most establishments in Australia, with the exception of fine dining or when a service professional provides exceptional assistance. In those cases, a 10% tip is the standard; all other tips are at your discretion. Of course, a small token of appreciation for helpful and courteous service is never declined.

    Business Hours

Australian businesses are most commonly open from 9am to 530pm, Monday, through Friday, with some variation. Government offices often close at 5pm, or even 4:30. Some shops, especially in cities, might be more likely to extend their business hours into the late evening and weekends.

    Local Tax

Australia imposes a 10% Goods & Services tax (GST), but most prices are marked inclusive of GST.

    Travel Information

    General Information

US citizens need to show their US Passports and Australian Visas upon boarding for travel into the country of Australia. For visits less than three months, you may opt for an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA). For trips between 3 and 12 months, you would need an official visa, both can be obtained through the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship.

Bringing your pet is tricky. Some cats or dogs can travel into Australia, but they must be registered with the Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment (DAWE), implanted with an identification microchip, confirmed for rabies vaccination and general health. Upon entry into the country of Australia, your pet would need to spend 30, or more days in an official DAWE quarantine facility. Check the DAWE web site for specific information about pet importation, breed restrictions, fees, and veterinary care timelines.

    Time Difference

There are three time zones in Australia:

Eastern Standard Time (AEST) encompasses the eastern states of Queensland, New South Wales (except Broken Hill), Victoria, Tasmania, and the Australian Capital Territory. In AEST, the time is 14 hours ahead of New York, 17 hours ahead of Los Angeles.

Central Standard Time (ACST) includes the Northern Territory and the New South Wales town of Broken Hill. The time in the ACST zone is 13.5 hours ahead of New York, 16.5 hours ahead of Los Angeles.

Western Standard Time (AWST) covers Western Australia. The time in AWST is 12 hours ahead of New York, 15 hours ahead of Los Angeles.

Daylight savings involves advancing the clocks one hour during the summer months, beginning the first Sunday in October, and ending the first Sunday in April. This is practiced throughout Australia, except in the Northern Territory and Queensland.

The official language of Australia is English.

Australia operates on 220-240 volt, 50Hz electricity, with a standard three-pin plug. Although many hotels offer converter plugs, you may also purchase this adapter prior to your departure at your local electronics store.
