    Car Rental Insurance

Car Rental Insurance Options with Auto EuropeUnderstanding your insurance coverage is one of the most important things to check off the list before you leave home. Typically, when you book with Auto Europe, you'll find three rates for each vehicle with escalating levels of insurance coverage. If you rent a vehicle in Italy or a few other countries where car rental insurance is required, you will only have two rate options, Inclusive Insurance with a Deductible and Insurance with a Zero Deductible rate.

Determining what insurance coverage is best for you depends on your travel itinerary and how comfortable you are as a driver in a different country. Other factors, such as the car rental insurance you have yourself or the ability to obtain insurance through your credit card company, may also impact the level of insurance you opt for.

Below we will review what is covered in your Auto Europe rental and provide more information on using your car insurance or your credit card coverage.

    • Value Added Tax (VAT)
    • Liability Insurance
    • Fire Insurance

Car Rental Insurance w/ Your Current Car Insurance

If you currently have car rental insurance, your policy may extend to cover your Rental. The first thing to confirm if you travel internationally is that your policy extends overseas to the country you'll be driving in. Many policies have exclusions in certain countries. Suppose the insurance you have on your vehicle has comprehensive and collision, bodily injury & property damage, or medical and personal injury protection. In that case, these can cover your rental car as well. You may be asking yourself, why wouldn't I use the car insurance I already paid for? A few of those reasons could include:

    • Avoid a rate increase if you have to use your insurance
    • Your insurance has a high deductible
    • Your current insurance may not cover everything, i.e., personal accident insurance.
    • May increase coverage limits, if international coverage is not available in certain countries

Car Rental Insurance w/ Your Credit Card

Credit Card Car Rental InsuranceOne of the lesser-known benefits of some major credit cards is the car rental insurance you utilize when booking your car with a credit card. The first thing to know is all credit card companies and their coverage will differ if they offer it. Most major credit cards, such as Visa, MasterCard, and AMEX, offer some form of coverage when using their card. If you elect to use the insurance offered by your credit card, confirm your coverage before you leave your home and bring documentation to provide to the car rental supplier when you pick up your vehicle. Most credit cards offer secondary car rental insurance, so you will first have to file a claim with your insurance before the credit card company steps in to pay; this could lead to an increase in your insurance policy rate. Credit card insurance coverage does not extend to all countries overseas. Your credit card won't cover you when driving a rental in countries like Australia, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Jamaica, and New Zealand.

These are just a few tips and notes on credit card insurance coverage; always confirm you understand what your insurance provider covers. You can find more information on using credit cards to cover your rental insurance with Auto Europe.
