Road Signs of France


Participating in the Vienna Convention, France will utilize many of the standard road signs that are present as you drive in Europe. The same danger, priority, and facility signs will alert you to oncoming road conditions and services that you may see in other parts of the continent. Below are a few examples of road signs that will be unique to France.

French Stop Sign Though this priority sign is not unique to France, anyone who has driven in French speaking Canada may expect this priority sign to read "arrête" in French rather than "stop" in English.
Speed Limit A direction sign noting the speed limits for driving inside cities, outside cities, and on motorways.
Detour A temporary directional sign noting "déviation," or detour in English.
Detour Ends A direction sign advising that the temporary detour route has ended, advising "fin de déviation," or end of detour in English.
Snow Chains Required A mandatory sign requiring the use of snow chains for travel may be seen when traveling in mountainous areas in France.
