Road Signs of Australia

Australia, having not signed the Vienna Convention to standardize road signs, has still maintained similar standards through its relationship to the United Kingdom. Many similarities exist with basic priority, danger, and mandatory signs, but you will also find road signs unique to Australia. Examples of these unique signs are listed below.

Yield to Pedestrians A priority sign indicating a pedestrian crossing where vehicles must yield to pedestrians. This is an example of a sign that is not standardized as an inverted triangular shape noted by the Vienna Convention.

Upcoming Routes A direction sign indicating available and upcoming routes and streets.

Koala Crossing A danger warning sign that is only used in Australia, advising of koala bear crossings.
Kangaroo Crossing Another danger sign that advises of kangaroo crossings. This sign is not found in any other part of the world and is only used in Australia.
Safety Zone A priority sign indicating that the upcoming traffic area requires increased caution. This is often a diamond shaped danger sign in countries that follow the Vienna Convention.
Keep Left A mandatory sign that requires travel to the left of the posted sign area. This is used to direct traffic around an island or barrier.
