Customs
Travelers are not required to pay duty on an appropriate amount of items for their personal use during their visit. In addition, the following duty-free allowances apply: no more than 2 liters of wine, 1 liter of alcohol and 200 cigarettes or 50 cigars or 250 grams of tobacco.
Currency Exchange
Banks offer the most competitive exchange rates for cash and travelers checks and are open from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and then from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturdays. Outside of regular banking hours you can find numerous bureaux de change throughout the country and money can also be changed at most major hotels in Slovenia. It is important to note however, you will be subject to a higher commission than that of a bank. ATM’s are readily available throughout the major cities, but be careful not to depend on cash dispensing machines in rural Slovenia. Credit cards are readily accepted by most hotels, higher end restaurants and shops as well.
Tipping
It is customary to provide 10% gratuity in restaurants, hotels and taxis. Feel free to recognize exceptional wait staff with an additional 5%, it will be gladly accepted.
General Business Hours
Shops in Slovenia are open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday to Friday and from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday. Very few shops will have operating hours on Sunday. Most business offices are open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday. Restaurants hold standard hours ranging from 7 a.m. to about 10 p.m. depending on the institution and it’s specialty.
Value Added Tax
The VAT is 20%, but tax rates range from 5% - 27% depending on the product or service rendered.
