Customs
Travelers are not required to pay duty on an appropriate amount of items for their personal use during their visit. In addition, the following duty-free allowances apply: no more than 2 liters of alcohol and 4 liters of wine and 200 cigarettes.
Currency Exchange
Banks are open from 9 a.m. to noon for general business and currency exchanges and then from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. for currency exchanges only, Monday to Friday. Currency can also be exchanged at most major hotels in Romania. Banks will easily cash travelers checks, and ATM’s are widely available throughout the country.
Tipping
Tips are not expected except for special services, and when it seems merited US$1-US$2 is sufficient. Taxi drivers expect 5% and it is common practice to “round-up” the bill at a restaurant or eatery.
General Business Hours
Most shops in Romania are open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. from Monday to Saturday. Some of the larger stores will have longer opening hours. Some stores will be open on Sunday from 6 a.m. to noon depending on the time of year.
