Many Vikings stayed in Dublin after their defeat by the Irish in 1014 and adopted Christianity. In 1066 after the Normans occupied England, they started moving into Ireland and merging with the Irish. The English controlled only a small part of Ireland called the Pale, which was a coastal strip around Dublin. Dublin had bad luck for the next few centuries with several defeats but by 1592 Trinity College was established creating Dublin''s educational tradition.

In the 18th Century Dublin became the 5th largest city in Europe. In 1801 the Act of Union came into effect, which brought Ireland and England together to form the United Kingdom.

Today Dublin has grown to a large city with a population of about 1.3 million people. The citizens of Dublin are a mixed population from Europe and the rest of the world.

Grafton Street on the south side is a shopping area with fashionable stores both foreign and local, fine jewelry stores and café’s. Dublin’s exclusive Jewelry Store, Weirs, is located on the south side of the river along with Brown Thomas and Bewley’s Café’s.
