In Portugal, the law requires that drivers carry unlimited third-party liability insurance, but it is automatically included in the price of all car rentals. This car rental insurance protects you from any liability resulting from property damage, death, or injury to others caused while you are operating your rental vehicle in Portugal. The cost of fire insurance is also included in your rental car rate.
If you'd prefer to opt for more extensive coverage while on vacation in Portugal, you can take advantage of our inclusive rates, which are available at a discount when purchased in advance of your trip. These car rental insurance rates provide a waiver for collision damage, and in most cases, they also cover the vehicle in case of theft.
Collision coverage for drivers in Portugal costs approximately US$14 - US$55 per day, if purchased at the rental counter. The insurance limits your deductible for collision damage to US$1140 - US$3975, depending on which vehicle you rent. Super CDW may also be offered locally to reduce the deductible to a number as low as zero, but may not be available through all of our partners.
The price of theft protection (purchased at the time of pickup) ranges from US$5 - US$15 per day. This coverage offers the same vehicle-dependent deductible range as the collision damage waiver.
Local car rental agencies in Portugal may offer supplemental insurance as well, which is designed to further reduce your deductible in case of collision or theft. Personal accident coverage runs approximately US$5 - US$8 per day, and may be purchased at the rental counter upon your arrival in the country.
Please be aware that all listed insurance rates are subject to change without notice.
As mentioned above, liability and fire coverage are mandatory, and are included with all car rentals in Portugal, but you are not required to opt for theft and collision insurance.
However, if you are planning on taking advantage of the coverage offered by your auto insurer or credit card issuer, there are some restrictions that you may want to consider before doing so.
Credit card companies may exclude certain types of vehicles from their car rental insurance policies. Examples include exotic cars, camper vans, vehicles valued at US$50,000 or more, and off-road vehicles.
They may also limit their coverage to rentals lasting less than thirty days long, and may not offer coverage for rentals that originate in certain countries.
Credit card issuers will also require you to pay for the cost of repairs, and then submit documentation for reimbursement, and many will file a claim with your insurance company before reimbursing your deductible.
Your insurance company may limit rental car coverage to the value of your personal vehicle, which could pose a serious problem if you like to treat yourself to a luxury vehicle when you travel abroad. In addition, any incident that you experience while driving your car rental in Portugal could cause your risk category to be raised, which may result in higher premiums.
So, while you're not required to purchase supplemental insurance policies when renting a car in Portugal, doing so is certainly worth considering.
