No, it's not just you-there is a marked increase in the number of mustachioed men lately. "Movember" is a world-wide charity initiative that is meant to raise awareness and of course funds for mainly prostate cancer, as well as other lesser known cancers.
To participate, men grow mustaches throughout the month of November. The "Mo Bros" usually form groups and throw fund raising events. Since 1999, when a group of university students in Adelaide, Australia coined the phrase and started the tradition, Movember has become one of the top 100 NGOs (Non Government Organizations) in the world.
Even airlines are participating in this year's festivities. Three airplanes are sporting moustaches this November.
They call this tidy 'stache "the connoisseur" and it's painted on one of the fleet's A319s. The airline aims to raise over $125,000 for prostate cancer research. Their former CEO is a survivor of the cancer.
Coincidentally, Quantas' CEO is also a prostate cancer survivor. To show their support, the airline has painted a jaunty black moustache on the nose of one of their 737-800s. The official worldwide Movember URL also graces the plane.
This airline went all out, adorning one of their Boeing 737s (nicknamed "Mo Boe"), with a huge, curled handlebar moustache. WestJet's CEO was one of the top individual fundraisers in 2011, pulling together $85,000 for the charity. They encourage employee participation with contests and prizes.
