The latest case of Transportation Security Administration being fired for misconduct is taking place at Logan Airport in Boston this week. Six screeners have been let go due to inattention on the job. Also, 14 other TSA officers are also being suspended from the same department.
Apparently, the officers are being investigated for not properly screening checked baggage while they used their cell phones for personal use, snacked and conducted personal conversations. Their job description includes monitoring screened luggage for suspicious items and possible explosives.
Similar firings took place earlier in the summer, in major airports around the country. In New York's JFK airport, eight air marshals were caught drinking on the job, and there were six related suspensions. At Newark airport, eight baggage screeners were fired for sleeping during their shifts and other violations. In Philadelphia, seven employees were fired in a case of bribery and in Fort Myers, 37 suspensions (including the security director) and five terminations resulted from failure to conduct random passenger screenings according to TSA policy.
The TSA has issued a statement regarding the situation that reads, "All TSA employees are held to the highest standards of conduct and accountability...These standards are critical to our work and the TSA's commitment to the safety of the traveling public."
