Concorso D'Eleganza Villa D'Este: 22nd - 24th May 2015
One of the most glamorous motoring events in the world, the Concorso D'Eleganza Villa D'Este is a beauty pageant of vintage and classic cars held in late spring on the shores of Lake Como in Cernobbio. Participants are invited to the exclusive venue, the Renaissance patrician residence Villa D'Este, to enter competitions in one of three categories. These categories include "Historic Cars," "Concept Cars & Prototypes," and "Motorcycles," and the competitions are held privately within the grounds and rooms of the Villa D'Este. The event is open to the public on Saturday and Sunday, where the vehicles are on show at the exhibition space of Villa Erba.
The 2015 exhibition theme is "40 Years of BMW Art Cars," a unique project started in 1975 by American artist Alexander Calder, who gave the BMW 3.0 CSL a colourful and modern finish of his own design. You can see a selection of the finest BMW art cars at this exhibition and mingle with the socialites of Lake Como. While the gates are opened to the public at Villa Erba on the Saturday and Sunday, the Parade of Historic Cars is held at the Villa D'Este, an event reserved for specially invited guests. The highlight of the Public Days is the exhibition of all the entrants in the cars category--historic cars, concept cars, and prototype cars--which lets visitors see the vehicles up close. There is an award ceremony for the best cars and motorcycles and plenty of time to enjoy the event and its stunning venue on the shores of Lake Como.
Make the most of your visit with car rental in Lake Como, and enjoy the many scenic drives around this beautiful Y-shaped lake. With May temperatures peaking at 19° C, you can expect balmy weather and many opportunities to enjoy a sun roof or rented convertible. One scenic route is from Colico in the north to Lecco in the south, passing through Belanno and Varenna on the way. Take the SS36 and SP72 for the most scenic route; the drive is about 45 minutes without sightseeing stops (and you will certainly want to stop along the way!), which is perfect for a day trip in between the festivities at Cernobbio. There is public transportation around the lake, but renting a car is recommended for extra autonomy and efficiency, as the buses and trains can often be unreliable.
Another great scenic route is from Cernobbio to Gravedona, taking the SS340 and SS340dir. Around an hour from A to B, the drive heads north along the shoreline of Lake Como. You could even visit Lake Lugano for a day, before or after the Concorso D'Eleganza Villa D'Este. You have the freedom to plan your road trip and adapt to changes when you have your own wheels! With any luck, you will also spot one of the many celebrities who own property around the lake; luxury homes are owned by Sir Richard Branson, Madonna, George Clooney, and the Beckhams.
