When traveling abroad, most people hope to head home with a unique souvenir that speaks to their experiences in a foreign land. While most vacationers with a car rental in Germany may have their hearts set on a stein from their favorite beer hall or a jersey from Bayern Munich, those who are hoping to pick up more traditional handicrafts and knick knacks may want to head to the city of Munich this August to participate in the summer edition of the Auer Dult St. James Fair.

Part cultural bazaar and part street festival, the St. James Fair is a lively marketplace that comes to Munich's Mariahilfplatz Square three times each year. The event traces its roots back to the Middle Ages and has emerged as one of the more popular tourist spectacles of the region.

Local craftsmen and artisans set up shop throughout the square, offering traditional goods at discount prices. Best of all, parents won't have to leave their kids in their car rental in Munich, as the fair will also include carnival games, attractions and a traditional merry-go-round.
