Westminster Abbey boosts tourism in 2011 with the Royal Wedding

Mar 06, 2012
For the first time ever, Westminster Abbey has ranked among Britain's top 10 most-visited attractions in 2011, according to The Association of Leading Visitor Attractions (ALVA). The increase in tourist traffic, The Telegraph explains, is due to last year's Royal Wedding. When travelers reserve a car rental in London, they can check out this popular historic landmark that has enticed so many foreign visitors in the UK.

Still, aside from the Abbey, the majority of UK tourist attractions witnessed an increase in visitors over the past year.

"The figures demonstrate that...our iconic attractions are a 'must see' and a 'must experience,'" Bernard Donoghue, the director of ALVA, told The Telegraph. "Even at a time of economic restraint, those attractions that have invested in refurbishment, new exhibitions...and retail products have seen a real return on investment."

With a history that dates back to medieval times, the Abbey has been the site of every British monarch's coronation since 1066. The building is a treasure house of paintings, stained glass and textiles and is the burial place of some of the most significant people in the history of the UK. Travelers can take a tour with an audio guide to learn about the history of the art, architecture and royalty within the walls of the establishment. Make sure to reserve a car rental in the UK to easily navigate between each historic attraction in the city.
