Where and what to eat on a trip to Germany

Where and what to eat on a trip to Germany

Feb 03, 2012
Sooner than later, visitors to Frankfurt are going to get hungry. When their stomach starts to growl, travelers with a car rental in Germany may have absolutely no idea where to look for food, or even what they should eat.

Fortunately, travelers should not have to drive far to find someplace to eat, as Frankfurt is home to more than 3,000 restaurants that feature cuisine from around the world. It helps if visitors have a smartphone so they can easily look up nearby eateries or locate their specific craving.

However, travelers should consider skipping a meal they can have anywhere in the world and try some authentic German cuisine while they have their car rental in Frankfurt. For those who are completely unfamiliar with this country’s food, it helps to know a thing or two about its famous dishes before venturing into a restaurant.

Meat lovers will be happy to know that beef, chicken and especially pork are commonly consumed in Germany. Sausages are very popular and come in a number of varieties. Should travelers order bratwurst off a restaurant’s menu, they will be eating ground pork and spices in some form of casing. Meanwhile, a blutwurst, or blood sausage, may be more of an acquired taste, as this delicacy is often made using pig’s blood.

Some popular German dishes that travelers may have heard of, but not know much about, include wiener schnitzel, a breaded veal cutlet, sauerkraut, a sliced, pickled green cabbage, and strudel, a rolled pastry.

Travelers will want to take their car rental to one or more of Frankfurt’s bakeries to try strudel and a few of Germany’s other pastries. After all, the country is known for its baked goods.

Many of the desserts that are served in Germany can be found back home, just by a different name. For instance, streuselkuchen is crumb cake, armer ritter is French toast and gugelhupf is similar to bundt cake.

One dessert that can be found at bakeries is käsesahne Torte, a smooth dish that features a mix of cheese and whipped cream, sandwiched between two thin layers of pound cake. Also tasty is the German gingerbread cookie known as lebkuchen, which often includes chopped nuts.

No matter what meals visitors to Frankfurt decide to dine on, they are sure to return to their car rental feeling more than a little stuffed.
