Learn about the global ocean at Oceanário de Lisboa

Jan 31, 2012
There is a reason why more than 1 million people visit the Oceanário de Lisboa in Portugal on a yearly basis. Travelers can learn what the reason is when they take their car rental in Lisbon to this massive aquarium.

While travelers have surely been to an aquarium or two in their time, they will have to admit the Oceanário’s design is quite unique. Once they exit their car rental in Portugal, individuals will cross a walkway that connects land to the Oceanário, which is built on a small body of water.

On the aquarium’s surface level, various exhibits explore the fact that there is actually only one global ocean. In addition, visitors can see wildlife from around the world, including a few creatures that spend time on land and in the air. For instance, in the North Atlantic portion of the Oceanário, travelers will see everything from sharks and rays to parrots and puffins. Meanwhile, the Tropical Indian exhibit is home to the golden butterfly fish, as well as flora like coconut and coffee trees.

The aquarium is set up so that after visitors look down into the Oceanário’s tanks, they can head to the site’s underwater level and get a better peek at the facility’s 450 species.
