Visitors to Italy who have a
car rental in Rome have a chance to see some of the oldest structures in the world, many of which are still in relatively good condition. One of the city’s best-preserved buildings is the famous Pantheon.
The first Pantheon was built when Roman general Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa commissioned the construction of a temple to the gods of ancient Rome. In fact, its name – Pantheon – means "to every god" in Greek. However, this is not the structure people will find on the Piazza della Rotonda today. Around 126 AD, Emperor Hadrian had it rebuilt after the original burnt to the ground.
When travelers visit the Pantheon, they will see how its architecture has influenced buildings around the world. Beyond the structure’s portico of large granite columns is a rotunda, distinguished as the largest unreinforced concrete dome in the world.
Throughout history, the Pantheon has served many purposes. For instance, during medieval times, the structure became a Christian church, and later served as a tomb during the Renaissance.
After visiting the Pantheon, travelers can take their
car rental in Italy to some of the Eternal City’s other historic sites, including the Colosseum and Trevi Fountain.
