Latvia is situated on the Baltic coast and borders Estonia in the North, Lithuania in the South, the Russian Republic in the East and Byelorussia in the Southeast. The coastal plain is mostly flat, but inland to the east the land is hilly with lush forests and pristine lakes. Riga is the capital located on the coast, but other cities not to be missed are Daugavpils, Liepaja, Jelgava, and Jurmala.
To rent a car, you must be at least 21 years old (age may vary by car category) and have held your license for 1 year. Drivers under the age of 25 may incur a young driver surcharge. An International Drivers License is required for rental Seatbelts are mandatory.
Speed limits in Latvia are as follows: City 31mph/50kph Open Roads 55mph/90kph Highways 62mph/100kph
Drive on the right hand side of the road. Driving with lights on is required 24 hours a day. Seatbelts are required for drivers and passengers in the front seat. Child seats are required.
Gas stations are well-equipped and widespread, most 24 hour service. You will want to gas up at Statoil, Neste, Shell, of Lukoil for highest quality and value.
There are no toll highways in Latvia.
Some areas of Latvia have established 'Pay and Display' parking, in these areas you will need to purchase a disc or ticket from a meter to display on your dashboard. Illegally parked cars will have a wheel clamp placed on them.
General Information
Car rental insurance varies widely, so please review the information below prior to making your reservation. Regulations of the country where you rent the car will be in effect for the duration of your rental.
All our car rental rates include fire and third party liability insurance. In Latvia, our rates also provide collision and/or theft coverage at an advance purchase discount. Specific insurance information for your reservation will be printed on your confirmation voucher.
The following guidelines apply to rentals commencing in Latvia.
Required Coverage
In Latvia, Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and theft protection are included in Auto Europe rates. CDW reduces the deductible (responsibility of the client) to US$330 - US$1,180. Theft protection reduces the deductible to US$330- US$1,180. Third party liability insurance covers US$55,000 in case of damage or injury to people or property outside of the rental car. Fire insurance is also included. Super CDW may be offered locally to reduce the deductible as low as zero.
Optional Coverage
Personal Accident Insurance is available locally with select suppliers at a rate of approximately US$10 per day. Optional insurance coverage is available with select suppliers only, rates subject to change without notice.
General Information
Most car categories can be driven outside of the country with advance notice, however you will need to purchase ‘Green Card Insurance’ at the border. Travel restrictions may apply. Please take a minute to ensure that your intended itinerary will be possible with the car you plan to rent.
Restricted Countries
Travel into other countries may be available by special request and may incur additional fees and/or insurance. You will be responsible for purchasing the additional insurance at the Latvian border. Travel into Russia is not permitted at this time.
One-Way Rentals
Domestic one-way rentals are available between select locations, additional fees may apply. International one-ways may be arranged for an additional fee, all international one ways are on request.
