George is the sixth oldest European settlement in South Africa and was named after King George III, the reigning British monarch in 1811 when the town was founded. It didn't take long for the original inhabitants to build their churches and Pacaltsdorp Church, a Norman-style stone church was completed in 1825. Seventeen years later, the Dutch Reformed Mother Church was consecrated and, not to be outdone, the Catholics completed St. Mark's Cathedral 8 years later in 1850. This last had the distinction of being the smallest cathedral in the Southern Hemisphere until extensions were added in 1924. The Cathedral is most notable for the large number of stained glass windows it possesses in relation to its size. Pardon me boy, is that the Outeniqua Choo Tjoe? Opened in 1928 and declared a preserved line in 1993, it is South Africa's last regularly scheduled steam train service and operates on the Outeniqualand Preserved Railway line. The trip takes you through the heart of the Garden Route, 416 square miles that contain 8,500 plant species, 68% of which occur only in South Africa.
