The area of East London has long attracted visitors not the least of which is the fellow who left his footprints in the mud some 200,000 years ago, making this the site of the world's oldest fossilized footprint. Shell middens and rock art in caves confirms the presence of later habitation by the ancestors of the San and Khoikhoi people that greeted the first European visitors in the 18th century. East London is famous for one other prehistoric resident. In 1938 a local fisherman, Hendrick Goosen, caught a coelacanth in his nets, a fish thought to be extinct for 400 million years. Others have since been located but the original specimen is now in the East London Museum. During the Harbor Festival some of the fastest powerboats in the world come to East London and the city is a stop for auto racing's Grand Prix. If you prefer to be a participant instead of a spectator, fishing, diving and sailing are popular and available right in the harbor. Rock climbing for beginners and seasoned climbers is available in the Amatole Mountains, as are breathtaking hikes. Some bus transportation is available but a rental car is much more convenient.
