The Rome Ciampino Airport was opened in 1916, making it one of the oldest airports still in operation. Since Leonardo da Vinci Airport opened, Ciampino has been handling a large number of charter and executive flights. Low-cost carriers have helped boost this location to one of the fastest growing airports in Italy. Due to such rapid growth, the Italian Ministry of Transport has to look for a third airport for Rome, which would take over some excess traffic in Ciampino.
