Kalamata is the capital of Messinia prefecture, located in the Southern region of Greece. The city developed after 1205 when it became a fief of the Villehardouin family. It later came under the rule of Venice and the Ottoman Turks until 1821. It was destroyed in 1825 by Ibrahim Pasha during the Greek War of Independence, later to be rebuilt to the beautiful city that we know today.
