In its history, Lappeenranta has been under Swedish, Russian and Finnish rule, and each culture has left its mark. The Fortress of Lappeenranta was erected in 1721 as a defense against the Russians but fell in a matter of hours 20 years later. The Russians continued the work that had been started and used the fortress as a border defense of their own. Today the walls hold the South Karelian Museum, the oldest Orthodox Church in Finland, Museums of cavalry and art and several shops and restaurants. Lappeenranta is a cultural canter for the entire South Karelia region. The City Theater hosts over 175 performances each year and the City Orchestra hosts almost 40 concerts. The city's residents enjoy all the usual recreational pursuits both active and sedentary but as an inland port Lappeenranta can also offer the opportunity to cruise the Saimaa Canal or tour the archipelago of islands in Lake Saimaa. Be aware that some of the cruises will require that you have your visa with you, ask in advance. If you forgot to pack your sea legs you can rent a car and explore the area on your own.
