In the 1880's there were only three steam-powered sawmills in all of Finland, one of them near Kemi in an area called Karihaara, an area soon incorporated into the city as Kemi grew. It's hard to top a cruise on an Icebreaker for novelty and excitement, after all the Sampo is the only ship of its kind in the world and can break ice up to 25 feet thick. If the cruise hasn't quite sated your need for thrills, you can don a cold-water survival suit and float among the ice chunks in the channel the ship cut. Snowmobile trips are available, as are dog sled trips. What could be more Lapish than to see the Northern Lights from a dog sled? Questions about driving in Kemi?
