Kajaani was founded in 1651 when Count Per Brahe announced the town's rights while visiting Kajaani Castle. The ruins of Kajaani Castle are truly that, ruins, but they are worth a look if you're in the area. More interesting is the Kajaani Kirrko, which was lauded as the epitome of neo-gothic style when it was built in 1896 but now calls to mind a "B" movie horror set. As in much of Finland, outdoor pursuits take center stage. Although speaking of stages, Kajaani has a very active cultural life. In 1833 Elias Lonnrot made Kajaani his home while he spent the next 20 years as the district physician and collected the poems of rural Finland. The poet Eino Leino was born nearby and went on to become one of the most important figures of Finnish poetry. With such a pedigree is there any wonder the theater and literary arts have a large following here? There are several festivals in the summer and concerts all year round.
