It's not surprising that three of the world's best known musical acts should hail from Winnipeg, given the city's support of the performing arts. Winnie, however, requires a bit of explaining. In 1914 Harry Colebourne joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force and left Winnipeg for England with a bear cub he named Winnie in honor of his hometown. Winnie was left in the care of the London Zoo when he was ordered to the front. Enter A.A. Milne and his son Christopher Robin who became enamoured of the bear. The writer penned stories of Winnie and Christopher and the rest, as they say, is history. Fans of the books will want to visit the statue of Winnie and Lt. Colebourne at the Assiniboine Park Zoo. One note, the bear is referred to as "Winnie the Bear" as Disney has a stranglehold on the rights to the other name. If you need a break from the city, rent a car and make the 10 minute drive to Oak Hammock Marsh, a 36 square kilometer wildlife management area and interpretive center.
