The Doukhobors, a communal religious community, flourished in the area from 1908 to 1913 and their holding company, the Christian Community of Universal Brotherhood, prospered until 1938 when banks seized it. The Doukhobor Village Museum, a recreation of a Doukhobor settlement, is easily reached with a rental car and is well worth the visit.
