The NorthWest Mounted Police (the legendary Mounties) built Fort Calgary in 1875 and with the coming of the Canadian Pacific Railroad in 1896, the city began to grow. By 1911, the city's population had reached 85,000 and it had become an economic center and a major shipping point for cattle from the surrounding ranches to markets in the east and west. Between 1974 and 1980, Calgary's population doubled to 650,000 as a consequence of the oil boom and the resulting construction frenzy has practically rendered any building pre-dating 1974 eligible for heritage status. The Glenbow Museum and Fort Calgary Historic Park have exhibits on the natural history of the area, Native Americans and the development of the city. If you like your history first-hand, consider a trip to Dinosaur Provincial Park, you'll need a rental car as the park is 124 miles east of Calgary but you will be able to see fossils "in situ". 35 species and over 300 museum-quality specimens have been uncovered here.
