Start at Fort Saint Louis, the bastion that has watched over the bay since the mid 1600s. Since it's still an operating naval station, you can only tour part of it, but the view of the bay is lovely. If you're lucky, you'll spy an elusive Green Iguana. A small colony of these cute reptiles has lived at the fort for hundreds of years!
For even more natural beauty, head to the Jardin de Balata, the private botanical gardens just outside town. You can stroll amongst over 3,000 tropical species of trees and flora on beautifully manicured paths. The view of the mist shrouded Pitons du Carbet in the distance is enchanting. With a car rental in Fort-de-France, you'll feel like you are in two places at once, a balmy, rustic island and a refined European town.
Perhaps the most striking landmark in the city is the soaring spire of Saint-Louis Cathedral. It is the seventh church to be built on this site after hurricanes, fires and earthquakes previously damaged the old ones. It is impressive in its all-wooden splendor so you won't want to miss at least a glimpse of it.
