By Italian standards, Colleferro is an infant city, with development of the city beginning only in 1912, on the site of a long-disused sugar factory. During World War I, a large explosives factory was constructed which led to thousands of citizens of Rome relocating to the city to find work. During World War II, the city was completed razed by Allied bombs seeking to destroy the explosives factory. After the conclusion of World War II, Colleferro was redeveloped to serve as an industrial and residential center just outside the city of Rome. Travelers who find themselves renting a car in Colleferro should make it a point to view the World War II ruins in the city, most notably a massive air-raid shelter which housed as many as 2,000 civilians during the war.
