If you're planning on renting a car in Europe, there is a lot you will want to figure out before you leave regarding you and your car's insurance. These are the most common insurances available from rental car companies.
Liability Insurance covers damage to persons or property outside the rental car.
CDW/Collision Insurance covers damage to the rental car itself.
TP/Theft Insurance covers the cost of the vehicle in the event it is stolen.
PAI/Accident Insurance covers medical expenses for the driver and passengers, and is typically purchased at the rental counter.
PEC/Effects Coverage is for things inside the vehicle that are stolen or broken in an accident, and is typically purchased at the rental counter.
Auto Europe offers two rates for each vehicle in most locations: basic and inclusive. An inclusive rate will normally have liability, theft, and collision insurance built into the price. If you purchase the inclusive rate, you will want to make sure that you are aware of the deductible amounts. Because they can be rather high in some locations, there may be additional coverage you can purchase at the counter that will lower the deductible.
The basic rate does not include the collision or theft (CDW / LDW) insurance. You may be able to use your credit card for this coverage. It is up to you to contact your credit card company to find out if they will cover your rental car insurance while you are in Europe. If they do, you will need to make sure you use that card to pay for the rental in advance and also present it at the rental counter when the vehicle is picked up.
You may be offered personal accident insurance (PAI) at the counter. That insurance is generally for medical expenses for the driver and passengers of the rental car. Personal effects coverage is also available in some locations. It covers the cost of things inside the vehicle in the event they are stolen. It is difficult to prove the value of items in the car in the event you need to file this claim, but if you have receipts for any of the items, the process is easier.
Any claim, no matter how small almost always requires a valid police report. If you need to file a claim, it is best to call the number on the rental car keychain after contacting the police. It's important to understand what you are liable for, and know your responsibilities. If you have any questions regarding your car rental insurance, please contact Auto Europe at 1.888.223.555.
