This city used to be the ancient port for the inland city of Fermo, and is now a lovely seaside resort with a small working port. Some of the main attractions are the beaches, and the use of a rental car is wise, allowing you to shop at the beachside attractions.

History

The first known history of this beautiful town is from the 1st century BC. In 1260 Porto San Giorgio was given to the town of Fermo, where it acted as its port. A period of strong urban expansion took place in the 17th century, and the city became independent 1741, enabling the city to elect its own counsellors and magistrates. The implement of the railroad in 1863 gave a boost to economy and tourism. In 1927, it was declared by Ministry Decree, a Stazione di Cura e Soggiorno (Healing Station and Resort).

Recreation

Some say the best day to visit Porto S Giorgio is on the second Sunday of July. This is the time for the Festa del Mare, when fish are fried in the open air in a giant frying pan, which is fifteen feet across, and weighs 10,000 pounds! The city is alive, with long sandy beaches lined with palms, pines and oleanders. Rent a car to take you from one sight to the next, as this beautiful town should not be missed out on.
