Events for 2010

Carnival
Fuerteventura
Feb 2010 - Apr 2010

For two full months of celebration, Spain truly embraces its native traditions, and extends the opportunity for all visitors to do the same. Nearly every town hosts its own carnival, but Fuerteventura throws the best of all. The end of each carnival typically concludes with spectacular parades, street filled parties, and much more. Have some coffee with dinner during this celebration of life; nights are filled with dancing till dawn! Out of every event to choose from this year, this is the festival we recommend the most!

Passion Play
Esparraguera
7 Mar - 21 Mar, 2010

Esparraguera is home to one of the most celebrated and beloved religious events in Spain. This FREE performance, which dates back to medieval times, reenacts a 48 scene production of the Passion of the Christ, and attracts more than 2000+ people each year. Celebrate this renowned event with fellow admirers; it is a beautiful and well planned reproduction.

Holy Week in Valencia
Valencia
Apr 2010

Holy Week in Valencia continues to be one of the regions’ most beautiful and lively traditions, and is highly enjoyable by all who attend. Modern day townspeople dress up as characters from the Bible, and the joyous crowd dances through the street. The three main events of the festival include the Gathering of Palms, the Procession of the Holy Burial, and the Procession of the Resurrection. This religious celebration is certainly a great reason to visit Spain this upcoming spring!

Festival of the May Crosses
Granada
May 2010

For the cultural experience you are sure to remember, head to Granada for the Festival of the May Crosses. Local inhabitants are known to decorate their balconies and plazas with stunning floral arrangements, which serve as the focal point for the dancing, singing and eating that follow!

Santa Eulalia Fiesta
Ibiza
2 May 2010

This annual festival is held to commemorate the day the local church crumbled into the ocean, right after the weekly mass had ended. Truly a miraculous event; not one worshipper was injured. Modern day celebrations include colorful parades throughout the streets of Ibiza, while locals dress in beautiful traditional costumes and vendors offer tasty treats to all who attend.

Fried Fish Day
Torremolinos
Jun 2010

The annual Dia del Pescaito festival takes place each year in the sunny town of Torremolinos. On this special day, visitors find fresh fish, fried anchovies, paella and squid rings, and all are free for the taking! Try to make it a point to attend this festival, if in area during June; it is well worth the experience to try these truly authentic local foods.

Running of the Bulls--San Fermin Festival
Pamplona
6 Jul - 14 Jul, 2010

This world renowned tradition, dating back to the early 14th Century, was originally held as a means for the local butchers to transport their inventory to markets. As the years past, young adults converted this process into a competition; now rather than chasing the bulls throughout the sectioned-off streets, participants are to run AHEAD of bulls, striving to make it to the gated pens at the end of the route. The event lasts for about 3-5 minutes, but has been known to go on for as long as a half an hour, depending upon the course the animals take and how long it takes to get them corralled. The attire for this event is quite simple, but also mandatory, and consists of a white shirt, white pants, red scarf (used a belt), a red handkerchief (to tie around their necks), and a rolled up newspaper, carried in hand. The newspaper is used to judge the distance between the runners and the bulls, and also, as a means to distract the powerful animals from potentially injuring a fellow runner. If participating in this event proves too strenuous, there are many observatory seats along the outer ring. Our only advice is to get there early, as the streets of Pamplona fill up faster for this event than any other surrounding venues combined!
