St. Patrick's Festival An annual tribute for the world renowned patron saint of Ireland is held at his final resting place, the burial grounds of the Downpatrick Cathedral. For the week that leads up to the internationally recognized holiday, an energizing buzz accompanies a plethora of “green” activities, literally taking over the streets of the quaint town. Complete with funfairs, carnival parades, animated exhibitions and live concerts, this friendly and non-violent event brings together multiple communities under the same principle; to embrace Irish traditions, and come together in peaceful celebration.
Festival of Fools If we could pick any event that we particularly want to see, it would have to be Belfast’s Festival of Fools. This giant collaboration of street entertainment kicks off with a modern and very popular take on the famous production, Don Quixote. Next, the UK’s largest street theatre installation, the Giant Maze, is now open to explore; you can practically get lost in the trenches of green architecture. Over the next couple days, more than 80 shows of fun and frenzy are showcased throughout the different venues, along with plentiful portions of the most delicious carnival food. If you’re looking for one of the best family events in the world, we certainly recommend attending this celebration of laughter, and side splitting enjoyment.
Museums at Night Weekend Most people wouldn’t think to go strolling through extensive museums during the late evening and early morning hours, considering most museums are closed, but here is a rare exception! Museums in Northern Ireland will be open until all hours of the night for this wonderful weekend of culture and history. Special late night exhibitions are on display for visitors at some museums, while others offer unique collections for all to view. This exclusive event happens only once a year, so be sure to visit Northern Ireland to witness it!
