The majority of the car rental companies in Europe will need you to have a credit card in order to complete the transaction. This is largely to do with credit limitations: the rental company need to know that you have enough money to cover any additional costs and your deposit. It is sometimes possible to rent a car using a debit card, but the agency may have to perform a credit check (and this can take some time).
It’s also important to know that many credit cards often include additional car rental insurance, which can come in handy. However, for this to work, you have to have booked the rental on the credit card and you must decline buying insurance from the rental company. Make sure you check with your credit card company their terms of insurance, and if there are any limitations, before you rely on this insurance to cover you.
Checking the Car
One of the most vital and often overlooked parts of renting a car is ensuring that, when you pick up the car, the company thoroughly check the vehicle for damage with your supervision. It’s important that the company highlight any existing damages to the car, however small, to ensure you are not liable for them when you return the car. It’s also valuable for you to perform a second check, to double check exactly what they have highlighted and that you agree. Don’t be embarrassed to give it a second look over or two take pictures for documentation.
