While poking through a local thrift store recently, I happened upon a vintage tandem bike in fire engine red. It put me in mind of the tune called “On a Bicycle Built For Two”, which I promptly began humming. Over the next few days, the image of that bicycle stuck with me, as did the song. I hummed, sang, and whistled it at odd moments while envisioning a sort of Mary Poppins and Burt moment, just as they jumped into the chalk painting on the sidewalk, but with a tandem bike instead of mobile carousel horses. The culmination of this Disney daze brought me to ruminations on other means of transportation for two, and how it lends itself to creating the basic scene for a couple’s night out.

Whether you’re under moonlit skies or bright sunshine, one of the most quintessential, romantic modes of travel is found within the nearest watercraft. While these Venetian row boats were once the major transport of the city, they are now primarily utilized to convey couples sedately through the city waterways. Add a violin and a rich baritone from an open air café, and you have the makings of an enchanted evening.
