Gastronomic Diversity and Local Cuisine in Cologne

Gastronomic Diversity and Local Cuisine in Cologne

Though sometimes overlooked in favor of other fantastic German cities like Munich or Berlin, Cologne is a thriving metropolis. Featuring not only a wide breadth of historic and cultural attractions, but a flourishing culinary scene, Cologne has over 3000 different eateries representing nearly 182 different ethnic culinary styles. No matter what style food you favor, you’re sure to find a variety of excellent examples in Cologne, from hole-in-the-wall restaurants to upscale dining. Take a drive through Cologne, and explore all the incredible restaurants, pubs, and bistros throughout the city.

Cologne’s Local Specialties – Kölsch Beer & Brewery Culture

Equally important as its vast culinary delights, is Cologne’s brewery culture and locally crafted specialty beer – Kölsch beer. Nearly every brewery or pub you enter in Cologne will feature its Kölsch beer above all else (not that you can’t find other domestic and imported beer as well) – a type of beer made from top-fermentation, producing a unique contrast of high alcohol content but without the hoppy flavors of traditionally high AC beers, instead described as “light and digestible.” Be sure to try some Kölsch beer on tap, served in a traditional “Stagen” glass – a glass entirely unique to Cologne.

Nothing accompanies a cold Stagen of Kölsch like a plate of Cologne’s hearty traditional pub foods, from Halver Hahn (cheese with a bread roll) and Himmel un Äd (black pudding, mashed potatoes, fried onions, and apple sauce) to Sauerbraten (vinegar marinated beef cooked in a stew) and Rievkoche (potatoes fried in wheat flour with onions and served with lingonberries). Though sometimes thought of as a parody to more refined culinary styles, Cologne’s down-to-earth local dishes are sure to leave you satisfied and happy.

International Dining in Cologne

Cologne’s local culture, especially food culture, is decidedly upbeat, friendly, and outgoing, evident the second you step into nearly any restaurant and sense the warm hospitality of its caterers. With something like 182 nationalities represented in its dining scene, Cologne is an excellent city for foodies and curious eaters alike to embark on some culinary exploration. Discover a variety of Italian, Mediterranean, North-African, Vietnamese, and other cuisine throughout the city, so no matter what you like, you’re sure to find it here.

Cologne’s Michelin-Starred Restaurants & Fine Dining

When most people imagine upscale dining experiences, they probably think of top-tier restaurants in France and Italy, but it would be foolish to not consider Germany’s many incredible offerings as well. Cologne is currently home to eight Michelin-starred restaurants, including the internationally famed, two-star Le Moissonnier headed by award winning, Aix-en-Provence born chef, Eric Menchon. Described as both “avant-garde,” and “of supreme quality,” Menchon’s Le Moissonnier offers soulful French bistro cuisine in an ambient atmosphere.

Elsewhere in Cologne, numerous high-profile restaurants reside offering everything from restaurant Metzger & Marie’s unique take on classic German fare, to the Mediterranean-fusion leanings of NADA Restaurant Bar. Most of the higher-end dining establishments in Cologne require reservations, but reservations or not, visitors to the city are guaranteed to enjoy the culinary diversity and endless options found there.

Cologne: A Foodie’s Paradise

More of a “make it yourself” kind of traveler? Then you’re in for a treat! Cologne’s cultural appreciation for quality food extends beyond restaurants, bistros, and pubs. Throughout the city a number of traditional grocers, delicatessens, bakeries, and cheese-shops can be discovered, offering (mostly) locally-sourced, gourmet quality goods – perfect for crafting your own culinary creations on the road. Travelers looking to take cooking classes are in luck too! Cologne has a nearly endless variety of tastings, cooking-courses, and even professional cigar-rolling classes.
